  1. Cat Power’s “Say” begins with gentle and sparse guitar strumming and the sound of thunder, then lead singer Chan Marshall’s voice comes in like a mother’s lullaby to sing…

‘Learn to say the same thing, let us hold fast to saying the same thing, I hope all is well with you, I wish the best for you, when no one is around love will always love you. Learn to say the same thing. What defeats people is a double confession. One time they confess one thing and the next they will confess something else.’

I’ve always been fascinated/troubled by the elusive nature of absolute truth in human relationships.

  2. In addition to having an unquestioned hold on best band name, Scottish indie rockers, We Were Promised Jetpacks, can also be counted amongst my favorite bands. They know how to rock and lyrically they present what I call this ‘pained optimism’- they speak earnestly about life’s challenges, but they always find a way to make you know that you’ll get through it. Plus, I’m a sucker for singers with thick Scottish accents. “Hanging In” is a great place to start with them if you’ve never heard the band.
‘I wish I had a secret, something I could share. But no one knows me better than I know myself, but I’m forgetful. when it seems to suit me most, when there’s something I should say. This is real talk, in real time. I’m hanging in to the thinnest piece of string that’s ever existed.’

Real talk. Real time. I love it.
