Eddie Vedder is the most influential lead singer in my life. He and Pearl Jam hit me during my formative teenage years and I’ve stayed with them since then. I’ve turned to their music and their lyrics often to get through difficult times. Eddie Vedder wrote the soundtrack to the excellent Sean Penn directed movie Into the Wild- based on the life of Christopher McCandless who died in the Alaskan wilderness after essentially hitchhiking his way out of society. Eddie’s work on the whole soundtrack is excellent, but the song “Guaranteed” truly stands out. I read somewhere that he wanted to write something in the vein of Cat Stevens’ classic ‘on the road to find out’. Lyrically, the song speaks to me. This constant pull between wanting to connect with others and wanting to be on my own. His guitar playing and his voice on this song are so calming. lyrics are full of wisdom.
‘everyone i come across in cages they bought. They think of me and my wandering but i’m never what they thought. Got my indignation but i’m pure in all my thoughts. I’m alive.’
I read an article in Paste Magazine listing the top 100 indie folk albums of all time that include the album Hospice by the band The Antlers. It is a concept album about death and emotionally abusive relationships…told as a painful love story between a hospice worker and a patient stricken with terminal bone cancer. This song is equally haunting and beautiful- as is the whole album. “Kettering” is a reference to Memorial Slone Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Lead singer, Peter Silberman’s voice is mesmerizing and the song builds to an emotional climax.
‘You said you hated my tone. It made you feel so alone. And so you told me I had to be leaving. But something kept me standing by that hospital bed. I should have quit but instead I took care of you. You made me sleep all uneven. And i didn’t believe them when they told me that there was no saving you.’
Manchester Orchestra is one of my favorite bands. Lead singer Andy Hull has a voice that can go from sounding like he is singing a bed time lullaby to one that will tear your head off. His lyrics are weighty and cover topics ranging from religion (his dad was a pastor) to death and mental illness…and also friendship, love, loyalty. I’ve seen them live a few times. They rock. “April Fool” is off their 2011 album, Simple Math. I think “April Fool” has something to do with questioning religious faith.
‘I tried once, i tried twice, I’m done. I am the once and finally replaceable son. I’ve got that rock and that roll. I’ve come around this time to set fire to your homes. And let you go.’
