I picked Neko Case because I had been listening to this album on repeat the week before the session. The story telling and gloomy nature of the song was really speaking to me. I also picked Bill Withers for the exact opposite. This song instantly changes your mood. It also felt like a fitting song to remember a dear friend – Alma – who had just passed away. We spent some epic evenings in L.A. and New York dancing to 70’s funk and soul tunes – including Mr. Withers.
For better or worse (I wouldn’t say that he has the lightest perspective on things 🙂 ), I have always connected to Conor Oberst’s lyrics. In the midst of life under the challenges of coronavirus, it is/was very easy to find examples of how challenging things can be and to adopt a pretty negative perspective on things. I have always loved Conor Oberst’s song “Hundreds of Ways” because I like its message…yep, life can be challenging, but there is always beauty around and it is your responsibility to find it.
‘Don’t look so forlorn, don’t you look so scared. Don’t get so upset, this world was never fair. But there are hundreds of ways to get through the day. There are hundreds of ways, now you just find one.’
I spent an incredibly high percentage of my music listening time listening to the band, Car Seat Headrest. Top ten all time band for me. “There Must Be More Than Blood” is off of their most recent album Making A Door Less Open. Such a cool vibe to the music this song and i love the topic…there must be more to Life itself than the individual lives we are living.
‘there must be more than blood that holds us together. there must be more than wind that takes us away. There must be more than tears when they pull back the curtain. of this much I am certain.’
The first time I heard “Make Magic” by Rising Appalachia was at a Sunday morning ecstatic dance session. I live in Humboldt County, California, and this song represents the spirit of so many here who are committed to living in harmony, justice and equity. It opens with
“In a land of mad takers
Can I be a mad giver?
In a land of the forsaken
Can I be a forgiver?”
Working our magic on “the wickeds of the world”, using the power of our voice to “say stop”. It’s got some fun witchy undertones – and is definitely worth getting out of your seat for to move and be moved.
