Covers, when done well, can bring a new feel to an “old” song. This setlist is great!
I chose Rage Against The Machine’s cover of Bob Dylan’s Maggie’s Farm because RATM is my absolute favorite band and their rendition is so powerful and dynamic. The osciliating guitar rift – wee ooo, wee ooo, wee ooo, wee ooo – Yeah Tom Morello!
“Ceremony” is a song by influential British early 1980s New Wave band New Order. But the first time I ever heard the song was a cover version by one of my favorite bands, Galaxie 500 (late 80s/early90s shoegaze).
Both versions are excellent.
New Order was formed after the suicide of Joy Division’s Ian Curtis. “Ceremony” was the last song recorded with Ian Curtis as Joy Division and was rerecorded and released as New Order. “Ceremony”just keeps driving you forward with a tight bouncy energy…like your zipping through a well lit tunnel…and the vocals just move perfectly in and out of the song.
If I had to choose between the two versions, I’d say that I prefer Galaxie 500’s. I just like the guitars better in this one and I love the reverb-drenched vocals…the song just moves patiently and slowly along until towards the end when lead singer/guitarist dean wareham’s magnficent guitar solo.
An all time favorite song of mine.
