Cat Power (Chan Marshall) is in my top 5 all time female artists. I am familiar with all 10 or so of her album releases and I respect greatly how her sound has evolved through the years from basically her and a guitar to something more complex and polished.
“Nude As The News” is off her 1996 album What Would The Community Think. It is raw, powerful, and emotional…dealing with the issue of abortion. The song, and her voice specifically, gives me the chills.
‘Jackson, Jesse I’ve got a son in me and he’s related to you, he’s related to you. He is waiting to meet you.’
Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus are three of the most accomplished and talented female singer/songwriters of this generation. Each of them has produced 2 excellent solo albums. They came together to form boygenius as a supergroup of sorts.
Stay Down is about recovering from an abusive relationship.
‘It’s a half-life, it’s a fallout. It takes so long for me to settle down. And when I finally do, there’s no one else around so I stay down.’
Heartfelt and introspective lyrics…a fluid and emotionally rich sound.
I could have 20 sessions on this theme and could come with 20 different artists. I wanted to bring two women that I felt deserved some respect and that were under-represented in today’s music. Alison Mosshart rocks whether in the The Kills or The Dead Weather. Powerful, subtle she delivers.
Next Siouxsie Sioux is the queen of goth. She seems to be much forgotten and I wanted to put her front and center. Brilliant lyrics and an amazing presence.
