  1. Even though he ripped off Sweet Home Alabama, I can’t get enough of Kid Rock’s All Summer Long. The lyrics are literal, the jam is fun enough, and that Lynyrd Skynyrd riff just seals the deal. “And we were trying different things, we were smoking funny things, making love out by the lake to our favorite song….”

  2. We held this session right before 4th of July and the theme was ‘songs of the summer’. As I thought about songs for the session I found myself going back to my teenage years in New Jersey during the early to mid 90s. Friday night car rides down the new jersey shore, tailgating at concerts at the (then) Garden State Arts, parties in friends’ basements…a fun trip down memory lane. A lot of the artists that came to mind were once that were big when I was in high school Dave Matthews Band, Blind Melon, Phish, Rusted Root, Blues Traveler, but I ended up choosing the Allman Brothers classic “Blue Sky”. I put “Blue Sky” in the category of songs that is just so good that you tend to overlook it. If summer had a theme song, “Blue Sky” should be it…it is perfect. A 3 plus minute guitar solo that is pure sweetness.
‘You’re my blue sky, you’re my sunny day, lord you know it makes me high when you turn your love my way.’

  3. ‘Havin’ a Party’ is one of my all time favorite songs. Whenever I hear it, I think of my home state of New Jersey and my friends and family dancing to it at some reception hall after a wedding or a graduation or some other celebratory event. While it is originally a Sam Cooke song, I heard it first as a version between Bruce Springsteen and Southside Johnny & the asbury jukes. This song just makes me feel good and life feel simple.
‘We’re havin a party. Everybody’s swinging, dancing to the music on the radio. So listen, Mr. dj, keep those records playing ’cause I’m having such a good time dancing with my baby.’
