  1. I’ve been listening to these songs with fresh perspectives on the lyrics since this session. Such a good playlist.

  2. I was exposed to BillyJoel at a young age. I can still remember my older brother’s Billy Joel cds- including 1976’s Turnstiles which included “Prelude/Angry Young Man”. I have always connected to this song because like a lot of guys I have been the angry young man. I am now in my mid 40’s (no longer ‘young’) and I at least recognize that it does very little good to be angry. Brilliant song.
‘I believe I’ve passed the age of consciousness and righteous rage. I found that just surviving was a noble fight. I once believed in causes too. I had my pointless point of view. And life went on no matter who was wrong or right.’

  3. Natalie Merchant is the first female artist that I loved. I was a big 10,000 Maniacs fan in high school and I enjoyed her solo releases as well. The coronavirus pandemic and the ongoing civic unrest in our country these past several months have brought a lot of pain to a lot of people and at times life has felt downright ugly. “Life is Sweet” is one of the most beautiful, comforting songs I have ever heard.
‘For they told you life is hard, misery from the start. It’s dull, it’s slow, it’s painful. But I tell you life is sweet, in spite of the misery. There’s so much more, be grateful.’

  4. I LOVE Freedom 90 because 1) it’s so catchy and 2) it talks about how love is this constant process of forgetting who we thought the other person was and allowing them to be who they are.

I chose the acapella version because I assumed everyone had heard the original, but TLC surprised me! I was so excited to be the one to share this song with people who had never heard it 🙂
    You’re welcome 😛

  5. Zac Brown Band has ALWAYS been one of my favorite artists/bands and this song was introduced to me at a really pivotal time in my life. I was in a relationship that was just hitting dead end after dead end, and it truly felt that even though we cared about each other, we were both “trying to drive”. Now, years later, in my relationship with my fiance, this song has a very different meaning to me – it really talks about the importance of being on each other’s “side”.

  6. “Sorry for Now” by Linkin Park is a tough song for me to listen to. Chester Bennington, the lead singer of Linkin Park, passed away in 2017 after taking his own life. The lyrics to this song give me chills every time I listen because you can hear the pain and suffering that he was going through with his mental health. Really dark, yet beautiful song.
