Will Butler is a main member of Arcade Fire and younger brother of lead singer, Win Butler. He has released two solo albums- including 2020s, Generations- which includes the song “Close My Eyes”. The song has a poppy and breezy feel to it and his voice is so easy on the ears. Together, they provide a comfortable and inviting bed for his straightforward and heartfelt lyrics that speak to the way I have felt often about the events in our country of the last several months…i am torn between wanting to do something about it and wanting to just close my eyes and not opening until it all passes. It’s a great song.

Tilly and the Wall emerged from the very fertile indie music scene in Omaha, Nebraska in the early 2000s on Conor Oberst’s Saddle Creek label. I remember being introduced and seeing them at SXSW around 2006. Instead of using drums, they rely in a tap dancer for percussion (essentially they amplify the sound of her tapping). Lyrically, this song is about coming of age. Questioning everything. The vocals and music present an energy of youth exploding (equal parts painfully and beautifully) into young adulthood. I love this song. It is an anthem for a very specific time and developmental period in my life.

I was admittedly nervous to present a “show tune” in this session – “This is Me” by Kesha from The Greatest Showman soundtrack. This song has been so powerful for me, especially this past year, as I fully enter into “adulthood” and my first real job in my career as a therapist. It is a song that is empowering, energizing, and deeply meaningful for me. “I’m not scared to be seen, I make no apologies, this is me.”
“Good to Go” was my country contribution of the day for this session! This song embodies a mindset that I definitely WANT to have, but I honestly do not always embody. The imagery at the beginning of the song of watching a funeral procession made me think of my own grandpa’s funeral procession and reflect on how that experience impacted me. Being part of that procession for someone in my own life forever changed the way I will view other funeral processions going forward.
“I’m not planning on leaving yet, but the truth is, you just never know. And if this is as good as it gets, I think I’m good to go.”
